Since 1981 Dr. Sharples has been a research fellow with the Open University as well as the university of Edinburgh. In 1984, he was a lecturer of artificial intelligence at the University of Sussex and nine years later became a senior lecturer at the School of Cognitive and Computing Science at Sussex University.
Mike Sharples also worked at the Kodak/Royal Academy of engineering as a research professor of educational technology, University of Birmingham. In 1999, he became the director for the centre for educational technology and distance learning (CETADL) at the University of Birmingham. At the University of Nottingham he became professor of learning sciences and Director of Learning Sciences Research Institute. Currently Sharples is a professor at the Open University and supervises PhD students who are involved in designing and evaluating educational technology.
